OUR STORY

Everything was born of a dream to support local ministries that would otherwise have no representation.

Our Story

Foundation

AMOR (Amazon Mission Organization) – founded in 1986, is fruit of Dr. Richard Walker’s ministry as a missionary from the late 60s to early 80s. Called to missions while attempting to pastor a local church in the USA, Dr. Richard discovered in the Brazilian Amazon the place to fulfill that ministerial calling, after long years of studies at Ouachita Baptist University [www.obu.edu], Southwestern Theological Seminary  [swbts.edu] and Luther Rice [www.lutherrice.edu), he decided to counteract the expectation of many, and chose to obey this fervent calling of the God. Departing with the whole family to Brazil, he devoted himself exclusively to making disciples, training pastors and planting churches along the Amazon river valley.

The development came through the efforts of churches in the USA, who also joined Dr. Richard in this cause, sending teams to serve in cross-cultural ministry. However, Dr. Richard's passion was serving local pastors, and through that passion the RBBI (River Bank Bible Institute - a Bible School/Conference) was born. Decades have passed, and these ministries have been a channel of transformation for thousands of riverbank families.

Dr. Richard stood firm in his conviction to reach the unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the local church, regardless of the cost and efforts he would have to face. He ministered beyond all established perimeters, for he had a firm conviction in his heart that "People will not believe the words of your mouth until they feel the touch of your hands."

All the ministerial efforts that Dr. Richard exercised, moved by God's love for the Amazon, became firmly rooted. The legacy of this trajectory lived through the second and now third generation of missionaries and leaders of his family. Through partnership missions, AMOR continues to champion the Gospel across the Amazon river valley.

"Love is the unsolicited gift of the best you have on behalf of another, regardless of response."

Dr. Richard E. Walker
